Story: Despite Eggman being forced to retreat, a sinister force still lingers. A dark force appears and consumes the Eggman Empire Fortress, which Sonic and the Avatar are sent off to investigate. Upon making it to the former fortress, the duo are sucked into the darkness. They awaken in an area which is black and shifts between the colours of the Chaos Emeralds, only to be taunted by a familiar voice.

"Foolish hedgehog, did you really think that was the end of me? Using my power, all of the planet you hold dear shall be consumed by Null Space."

It's clear to the duo that Infinite is still alive (somehow) and that they've got to stop him before the planet is consumed by Null Space.
